After a long week of early summer storms, we feared we might have to cancel this little ones first backyard swimming party. My birthday is only a couple days before hers, and I have many memories of backyard birthday parties. I invited all the girls in my neighborhood to attend a day of water balloon toss, trampoline jumping with a sprinkler beneath it (I swear a wet trampoline is bouncier), water kickball, with watermelon and ice pops for dessert. Naturally, Ramona would want the same... right?
I spent the day baking, while Michael and my sister Heather helped set up tables and a baby pool in my parents backyard. It wasn't long before guests started to arrive. I attempted to clean the frosting from my hair and clothes before heading out to join the fun. Ramona spent most of the night in her baby pool. There was a slide attached to it, and she learned how to climb it and slide down. So climb and slide she did! I am always intrigued that kids can do the same thing over and over and never tire of it. We all sang happy birthday, and Ramona smashed her cake in a very untimely matter, but I secretly didn't want it to end. The day had gone by so quickly and it finally hit me, I have a one year old! It was one of those ready or not moments, and I sat in awe thinking about how fast her first year of life had gone.
Friends and family continued to eat and chat while Ramona opened up all of her gifts. I think her toy lot more than doubled in size. She got a couple new pairs of shoes, that she wanted to wear immediately. And a mermaid doll, she held the rest of the night. Exhausted, she fell asleep as people slowly began to trickle out. We cleaned up the festivities, packed up her toys, and kissed our one year old goodnight.
